As political drama deepens in Bengal; Mamata’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee takes center role indicating his rise in the party

KOLKATA 18 MAY: At a time when the Trinamool Congress supporterswere seen in the streets protesting against the arrest of the TMC leaders, TMC MP Abhisekh Banerjee Trinamool Congress, tweeted and urged everybody to abide by the law and refrain themselves from taking the law in their hand that violates lockdown norms for the sake of the larger interest of Bengal and its people.

Here is a tweet by Abhishek Banerjee on this regard .

Political analysts, however, think that it was observed that during this Assembly election, Banerjee acted as a matured politician, very different from other years and instead of walking on a warpath, with the Center, he is very focused and concentrates on improving the party’s growth.

Biswanath Chakraborty, senior political analysts, said, “Although Abhisekh Banerjee did not come to the forefront. In this Assembly election, we have seen his speeches that sounded more matured, and he has shown his calm and composure during a critical situation like this. He was always seen close to political aide Prashant Kishor during the election. After the election, too, he was seen as a very mature politician, and his recent tweets reflect that he wants to handle the situation with much caution.”

Senior political analysts, however, point out that although TMC has not officially announced anything on the elevation of Banerjee’s position in the party, it was seen that those opposed to his ascent have fallen in

line and many TMC members are now openly talking about Abhishek as the future of the party in Bengal.

On Monday, four senior ministers in the Mamata cabinet and former leaders, including the Mayor of Kolkata, were arrested by the CBI. Although they were granted bail by the lower court, the Calcutta High Court stayed the

order, and they were taken to the Presidency jail. In the wee hours yesterday, three ministers were rushed to SSKM Hospital as they felt uneasy and needed hospitalisation.

Sources in the TMC said that Abhishek played a crucial role in this election. The Trinamool Congress won 29 of 31 seats in South 24 Parganas, which is known to be Abhishek Banerjee’s fort. He was also

given the charge of Jhargram district, where the BJP drew a blank in all four seats.

A senior TMC leader said, “During the election, we all have noticed that in various posters and banners apart from Mamata Banerjee’s photo, Abhisekh Banerjee’s image was also seen which

indicated that he is taking a solid position inside the party. Even in any decision inside the party, Abhisekh’s recommendations in various issues are being followed, too.

Abhishek Banerjee, 33, first became an MP in 2014. In less than a decade, the MBA-holder has seen his profile in the state rise rapidly. His strengthening profile and power in less than a decade of being in active politics has exposed Mamata to opposition jibes about propagating dynasty politics, and some resentment within her party too.
