Bengal: Congress working committee vs West Bengal Congress over alliance with Abbas Siddiqui’s ISF, Bengal Congress leader Adhir Chowdhury defends alliance

KOLKATA 4 MARCH: West Bengal Pradesh Congress chief Adhir Chowdhury feels that All India Congress leadership is aware of the developments of West Bengal Pradesh Congress and before the ties with ISF and CPI(M), the state Congress took permission from the AICC which has been approved by them. In fact, the storm over the internet is mainly over his decision to ally with the Furfura Sharif cleric Abbas Siddiqui’s Indian Secular Front (ISF).

His statement comes in after Congress leader Anand Sharma tweeted a few days back that parties like ISF and other such forces militate against the core ideology of the party. Though, this issue needs to receive a nod from the Congress Working Committee. Also, the tweet mentions that alliance with parties like ISF seemingly goes against Gandhian and Nehruvian secularism. Further, he tweeted and claimed that Congress cannot be selective in fighting communalists. But, must do so in all its manifestations, irrespective of religion and colour.

Notably, Chowdhury was responding to fellow Congressman Sharma who has been criticising the alliance with ISF. In particular, Adhir Chowdhury tweeted stating clearly that the Congress High Command is aware of his decisions.

Later, Chowdhury tweeted that CPI(M)-led Left Front is leading the secular alliance in West Bengal. Mainly, of which Congress is an integral part. Also, they are determined to defeat BJP’s communal and divisive politics and an autocratic regime.

According to Chowdhury, the ISF has ties with CPI(M). Also, ISF Chief Abbas Siddiqui has openly declared the same in a public rally. In this alliance, ISF is just a small part. Interestingly, Chowdhury shares how several other parties have shown interest in the alliance. In addition, he mentions how crucial is the alliance in the fight to defeat the saffron party.

Moreover, the difference between Congress leadership over this issue has come to the forefront. Chowdhury claimed that a section of the Congress leaders is trying to sabotage the party in Bengal. Mostly, trying to strengthen the hands of the BJP.

Chowdhury said, “There are various issues inside the alliance that needs to be resolved. But that cannot be done without ISF as well. ISF also has to be taken aboard. For a greater cause, something needs to be done and we are walking on the right track.”

On Sunday, during the Brigade rally, surprisingly when Siddiqui went to the dais, it created an unsavoury scene as Md Selim wanted to stop Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury from addressing the crowd. Instead wanted Siddiqui to talk to the gathering.

However, an angry Chowdhury stopped his speech and was ready to leave. It is worth mentioning how Biman Bose’s intervention saved the situation. Especially, after he persuaded Chowdhury to continue with the speech.
