Political landscape in West Bengal looked haphazard with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee changing her mind frequently

Kolkata : The political landscape in West Bengal looked very haphazard after its Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, suddenly changed her mind about the bureaucratic reshuffles leading to maximum chaos over predictions.

Not only Banerjee decided to stay away from the swearing in ceremony of second-term of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but also shook the state by changing four IPS officers in four days who will be placed as the commissioner of police (CP) at Bidhannagar and two IPS officers in two days for Barrackpore police commissionerate.

On Sunday, Banerjee reshuffled a few posts in the state cabinet. Gyanwant Singh become the CP of Biddhanagar police commissionerate. On Monday, she made a change in the same portfolio and made Nishad Parwez the Bidhanngar CP. On Tuesday, she again made a change and made Bharat Lal Meena the commissioner of Bidhanagar police commissionerate and on Wednesday, she again changed her decision and made Lakshminaryan Meena as the commissioner of the same.

On Tuesday at Barrackpore too, Banerjee made Debendra Pratap Singh the commissioner of Barrackpore police commissionerate and on Wednesday she changed Singh and made Tanmoy Roy Chowdhury the commissioner of the same.

On Wednesday, Banerjee also decided to stay away from the swearing-in ceremony of Narendra Modi. Several BJP leaders also claimed that Banerjee is furious because the saffron party has invited the family members of the people who were killed allegedly by the TMC goons in Bengal since 2016 to the grand ceremony.

West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh said: ”Banerjee cannot face the truth as she could not see the family members of those murdered by TMC in Bengal sitting with her. That’s why she will not join the swearing in ceremony of Narendra Modi for the second term to be held on Thursday.”

Banerjee tweeted“The oath-taking ceremony is an august occasion to celebrate democracy, not one that should be devalued by any political party.”

It may be mentioned here that Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik and Kerala CM Pinaray Vijayan  too did not want to attend the swearing in ceremony tomorrow.

On Tuesday, Banerjee said she would attend the swearing in ceremony as a “constitutional courtesy” after she received the invitation. She had also said at Nabanna that she spoke with few chief ministers and have decided to attend it.

“I have spoken to a couple of other chief ministers and have decided to attend it. There are certain ceremonial programmes under the Constitution. We try to attend such events when we get an invitation for the swearing-in programmes of the president and the prime minister,” Mamata added.

Dilip Ghosh also uploaded the list of karyakartas in his twitter account who have been killed in political violence by Trinamool Congress.

Kailash Vijayvargiya, of the BJP, also said: “This is just an excuse of Banerjee for not attending the ceremony. Our party has decided to respect the kin of the  martyrs in this way. What’s the problem with Banerjee in this decision.”

A section of BJP leaders also claimed that when Banerjee came to power in 2011, by defecting the 34 year Left legacy ,she has also invited the kin of the families of Singur and Nandigram. During that time ,no political leaders opposed her move as it was her party’s decision.

On Wednesday too poaching from Trinamool Congress continued with two other leaders senior Trinamool Congress MLA joining BJP. The MLA from the Salapur seat in Birbhum district, Mainul Islam , chairman of the youth wing of Trinamool Birbhum, Gadadhar Hazra joined BJP.

What political analysts say

Amol Mukherjee, a senior political analyst, said: ”Mamata is now under tremendous pressure after the BJP made such strong inroads in Bengal in this Lok Sabha election.  She is not convinced about whom to put in major positions. Also, she herself is taking time to realise what political moves she could take to keep her party in good shape .It’s natural that there will be some change in her political strategy to keep TMC in power.”
