Bengal’s Poll Slogan: Mamata goes from Didi to Bengal’s daughter, BJP claims Bengal does not want ‘Pisi’

KOLKATA 27 FEB: At a time when Trinamool Congress is aiming to project party supremo Mamata Banerjee as the sole triumph card for winning this year’s Assembly election slogan, Bangla ghorer meyeke chaye (Bengal needs its own daughter), BJP is also trying to project women leaders to hit back at TMC .

On the other hand the BJP pasted photographs of various women BJP leaders like Agnimitra Paul, Locket Chatterjee, Debasree Chatterjee on one side of the posters with the slogan mentioning that Bengal does want its own daughter, but  the other half of the poster has Didi’s photograph with the caption saying that Bengal does not want Pisi (paternal aunt).

In particular, with eyes on women voters and focus to sharpen its ‘outsider’ charge against the BJP, the TMC in West Bengal ahead of the assembly polls launched this campaign slogan last week.

Moreover, Bengal women voters are to decide the fate of the election, now. So, all political parties are attempting to get on the same bandwagon and raising different women-related issues. Also, the parties are now trying to make women the main poll plank for the upcoming Assembly election.

It is worth mentioning that while launching the new slogan, Trinamool Congress President Subrata Bakshi had said that everyone has noticed the hard work put in by Mamata Banerjee. Also, everyone should only vote for the ‘daughter’ of West Bengal.

Now, even poll strategist for Mamata Banerjee, Prashant Kishor exuded confidence over TMC’s coming back to power. He believes that the people of Bengal are ready to bring back their daughter as their leader. In particular, many believe that this prompted BJP to hit back. In addition, they started their own slogan campaign where they mention that Bengal of course wants her daughter back but not the Pisi (paternal aunt) referring to Mamata Banerjee here.

Here is a tweet of Kishor on this regard

Meanwhile, senior TMC leaders are of the opinion that BJP leaders are desperately attempting to make an alternative slogan. So, they have chosen the same pitch as the slogan. Also, they are trying to poorly portray Mamata Banerjee’s image in a negative manner. According to the TMC leaders, the people of Bengal are already aware of who the ‘real’ daughter of Bengal is and despite BJP’s efforts to defame the TMC supremo, they feel confident that Didi will win the election.

Partha Chatterjee, state parliamentary affairs minister, said, “BJP is desperate to grab power and we are all waiting for May 2. They can misuse our slogan but people of Bengal are aware of who the real daughter of Bengal is.”

In addition, CPI(M) leaders also feel that their song Tumpa Sona, highlighted the pain of the women in Bengal. (Tumpa Sona is an animated character taken from a local Bengali song, but Tumpa Sona is a woman who has already been subjected to torture in Bengal.

CPI(M) leader Sujan Chakraborty said ” Tumpa is an animated women character . The Tumpa song depicts the condition of women in Bengal and how they have been mistreated by the TMC ruled government.”

Mostly, all political parties feel that women’s voters will play a crucial role in this election.

Political Analysts Opines

According to political analysts, women’s votes will play a major triumph card for all the political parties. So, all the political parties in Bengal are trying to project the importance of women in this year’s Assembly election.

Amol Mukherjee, former principal of Presidency College and a senior political analyst, said, “This year women’s votes will play a crucial factor in the Assembly election. So, all political parties are harping on the importance of women in Bengal. Also, about how women have been subjected to torture. And how cases of rape and molestation cases are on the rise in Bengal during the TMC regime.”
