KOLKATA 29 JUNE: With the spike in COVID19 cases, West Bengal government has decided to make a Coronawarrior club in each districts where Corona recovery patients can provide mental counselling to those who are suffering from Corona.

On Monday West Bengal reported 624 new cases, 14 deaths. Kolkata reports 180 fresh cases; followed by North 24 Parganas and Howrah.

The decision has been taken after it was found that  critical Corona positive patients who are hospitalised and are sent to ICU suffer from  hospital delirium( depression for long over-staying at hospital ICU) which resulted in a mental set -back.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday announced that the Corona warrior club has already been set up at Murshidabad and 60 people have enrolled their names in the club.

The club members have been requested to provide mental counselling , speaking their story on their recovery and that Corona patients can recover if they are being provided with some care during the course of the treatment .

Banerjee said “ We will reimburse the COVID recovery patients who will help the patients provide mental counselling during the course of the treatment . Already 10 COVID warriors from Murshidabad club has expressed their willingness to join Murshidabad Medical College as COVID counsellors, 40 people have expressed their willingness to join Calcutta Medical College and Hospital and 10 people will join Midnapore Medical College and Hospital .”

Senior doctors are of the opinion that delirium can have detrimental consequences on the patient and they suffer from deep depression Often we call it ICU psychosis. During COVID19 we have witnessed many patients due to long stints on ventilator support , heavy sedatives and poor sleep and without interaction with the family members during this pandemic develop such delirium which can cause depression. The medical providers too wear personal protective equipments and spend limited time with patient , thus increasing a patient’s stress.

Dr Arnab Mukherjee, a psychologist working in a private health care establishment said “ This is a good initiative taken by the state government . During this period we have seen many patients suffer from depression after they have been tested positive for Corona . Soon after a patient has been diagnosed with Corona positive a, ward boy , a nurse and other hospital service providers themselves feel threatened and they hardly look after a patient . As the patient is weak and need nursing care , he/she naturally gets agitated and this resulted in deep depression among patients.”

According to Mukherjee 65 percent patients who are senior members and suffer from Corona along with other co-morbidities suffer from such acute depression and at this time mental counselling can help to recover a patient much early.
